Until this past Rotary year, the search for candidates that might ultimately become World Peace Scholars from District 6990 fell to the Educational Grants and Scholarships Committee. The Trustees of The Rotary Foundation now require that the recruitment and interviewing for what are now referred to as “World Peace Fellows” be a separate committee function under the District Rotary Foundation Committee, and for good reason. District 6990 is very fortunate to have found such a talented individual some years ago, Karla Castellanos, a former Ambassadorial Scholar from this district, who is completing a two-year term (2004-2006) at the Rotary World Peace Center located in the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia and, upon graduation, will join an elite global group of individuals: Rotary World Peace Fellows.
Margarita Tonkinson chairs the 2006-2007 World Peace Committee in our district. In addition to seeking out qualified candidates for the World Peace Fellows program she also works with interested parties regarding the Rotary Peace and Conflict Studies Program, a very different effort from the more established World Peace Fellows initiative. Read more here about this training program that seeks to provide professionals from around the world the opportunity to be trained in conflict resolution and mediation strategies.
