The District 6990 Rotary Elder Program was created in the spring of 2002 and officially opened for business at the beginning of the 2002-2003 Rotary year.
Rotarian Kirk Landon, of the Rotary Club of Coral Gables, was both the inspiration behind the nucleus of the initiative and the philanthropic force that funded the enterprise.
Over the course of five years Rotary clubs in this district designed projects that benefited older members of the community. Each project had at its core volunteer involvement which not only served to help area elder citizens but also to raise the awareness among Rotarians concerning the challenges faced by this segment of society.
Rotarian Lan Nghiem-Phu, also of the Rotary club of Coral Gables, maintained the program website for the entire five years as a service to Rotary. Being able to share the stories created by the projects put the face of the program on the Internet for all to see. Now, with the program having run its course the monthly newsletters are now archived on the district website. In doing so it is my hope that they will serve as a historical reminder of the program’s long run and as a reminder of the need for clubs to continue to keep elder citizens in mind when designing programs.
It was an honor for me to work as the executive director of the District 6990 Rotary Elder Program from day one until the doors closed on June 30, 2007. Thank you all for your support of the program over the years.
Respectfully,
Jack Martin
