The Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship Program is the world’s largest privately funded international scholarship program. Since 1947, nearly 37,000 men and women from 100 nations have studied abroad under its auspices. Nearly 800 scholarships were awarded for study in 2005-2006, which included 3 scholarships from District 6990.
The purpose of the Ambassadorial Scholarship Program is to further international understanding and friendly relations among people of different countries. Rotarians in District 6990 have supported this concept for many years and have continually sponsored scholars to countries such as Australia, Brazil, England, Italy, Japan, Scotland, Spain, South Africa and Venezuela.
While abroad, scholars serve as ambassadors of goodwill to the people of their host countries and give presentations about their homelands to Rotary Clubs and other groups. Upon returning home, scholars share with Rotarians and others their experiences that led to greater understanding of their host countries.
The scholarships have a maximum value of $26,000 for one year. To qualify a candidate must have a minimum of 2 full years at a college or university. The candidate must be a permanent resident of District, 6990 and cannot be a child or grandchild of a Rotarian. Also, a candidate must speak, read and write the language of the country of the proposed study institution. Rotary clubs are always encouraged to recruit qualified candidates.
The Ambassadorial Scholarship is a wonderful opportunity for any student. Generous contributions from Rotarians worldwide represent continued faith that the students who are Ambassadorial Scholars today will be tomorrow’s community and world leaders.
